Posture perfect for back care week
Most of us don’t give a second thought to our posture, but know that it could be improved. We slouch on chairs, hunch up when working on the computer and sag when we are feeling tired.
As this week (Oct 4 -10th) is National Back Care week, Twyford-based Physiotherapists, Physiocare, suggest the following top tips for looking after your back:
- Sit with an elongated posture when working at a desk. Imagine an invisible thread is connecting you from the top of your head, down your spine, to the ceiling keeping you upright
- Avoid slumping forwards – rounded shoulders created tightness between the shoulder blades and in the neck which can lead to headaches and other discomfort
- When lifting heavy objects, ensure that you bend from the knee, squatting down before lifting rather than leaning over and putting all the strain on your lower back rather than your leg muscles
- Work on strengthening your ‘core’ muscles – these act a bit like a girdle around your middle to provide support to your entire frame. Pilates exercises focus on strengthening these muscles and there are a number of simple exercises you can do to help
